How To: Burn ISOs Directly in Windows Vista

There are a lot of programs out there to burn ISO files, some free and some quite expensive. However, now that Windows vista is out, I have found myself running into many computability problems with my favorite burning programs. More specifically Nero 7 and DeepBurner have been giving me the most problems so far. But fear not, because there is a solution which is free, easy, and best of all is a windows Vista power toy, so it plays very nicely with Vista.

1. Download the ISORecorder Power toy.

Windows Vista 32

Windows Vista 64

Windows XP SP2 and 2003

2. Unzip and Install.

You may notice that there are 2 files Setup.exe and ISORecorderV3.msi. It shouldn't matter which one you choose, but I would start with the msi, and if that does not work then try the exe.

Continue through the installation as normal.

3. Burn the ISO to a disc.

Now you will have to locate the ISO file that you would like to burn.

Right click on it, then go to Open With->ISORecorder. You can also click Choose Default Program and then select ISORecorder so that it will open the ISO in the program on a double click.

Next, you will want to choose all of the settings to burn your ISO file i.e. speed, source, destination, etc.

When you are done, click next and let the burning begin. After that is finished your cd tray will open, and you will be notified that burning has completed.

This is an awesome simple tool for burning ISO files. Please go have a visit to the creator's site, Alex Feinman. Also, if you like the software give Alex a donation via PayPal at the bottom of his page.

Great find. I really needed this utility, since CDBurnerXP doesn't work on Vista.

You're the man. Much thanks.

I had a problem with the dll not properly registering. I found this list of FAQs, one of which that described how to register it manually.

I found the most success however opening a cmd window as administrator (right click, 'Run as Administrator') and running the msi setup from that window.

windows vista home premium / gateway laptop MT6840
Gr8 s/w works like its a part of the o/s, thanks ...

I installed it but I can't find it. Is it supposed to be in the start menu or something?

Anonymous said...

There is not .exe. It registers as part of Windows Explorer so you need to right click the .iso image and select Open with.. and from there this tool.

Anonymous said...

Works fine! Thanks!

Anonymous said...

Doesn't work. It ejects the disc while saying: "Closing disc. Estimated time: 16 sec". It stays like that, and it's not possible to close the window.

Didn't work for me in Vista Ultimate.
Received the error, "Operation has failed. Code: c0aa0403, Reason: The provided stream to write is not supported." when trying to burn the Visual Studio 2008 pro 90 day trial from an ISO.
I sent the developer the bug so hopefully he'll get it figured out.

simple and easy, did the job very nicely

Works flawlessly in Vista 64-Bit. Kudos to the developer for a great lightweight program.

In terms of Alastair's comment, no version of Windows has ever had built-in ISO burning...

Installed this on Vista x64 and burnt a DVD ISO, but it never showed me the "burning complete" screen. It's been half an hour and it's still saying "Writing data" with the progress bar at 100%. I can't eject either. Gotta restart. BRB.

Installed on Vista Enterprise running on a generic white box, Athlon XP2800+ with 2GB of RAM, Samsung 52x CD burner.

So far so good, install was flawless, and I burned a CD of DBAN 2.0 with no problems. (Darik's Boot and Nuke, which I highly recommend for military grade disk wipes)

Works great, Vista Ultimate 64 on acer laptop. Threw a opensuse11 dvd out in minutes with no hassle.

Cheers man.

Vista Premium 64bit, got the following error: "The provided stream to write is not supported".

Using a mounted iso (e.g. MagicISO) as the source for ISO Recorder V3 instead of the .iso file solved the problem here.

Calling it a "Power Toy" is a recipe for confusion. That title is reserved for Microsoft's tools.

Anonymous said...

I'm with Anonymous above here, please rename it, I thought it was an official Microsoft tool for a while.
Thanks for creating though!

...and that's another OpenSuSE 11 DVD out of 64-bit HP Pavilion running 32 bit Vista Business.

Hmm while I applaud someone having this application available, I also am sad that Vista 32 and 64 (being so expensive and such large GB OS's) don't have this as std feature. I am running multiboot 64,32, XP pro and Linux. Most of these sort of applications are std with so many Linux OS's. And MS so much $ and still leave people hanging.

Also I must admit when it was mentioned as a Vista Powertoy I thought that it was from MS. Now I see it is not it makes me nervous. How does anyone know that this program is clean and repudable, and not have any deviant possibilities? I mean everyone hoots and hollers how great it is but perhaps I am actually putting a TROJAN on my system, and all these positive responses are people that know its actual intention. I know it sounds paranoid but how can one be sure anymore.

Worked Great. Installed on Compaq Presario A900. Also had glitch burning ISo to a DVD, but it never showed me the "burning complete" screen. I waited and it still said "Writing data" with the progress bar at 100%. I pressed button on DVD and it changed to "finalizing" and then ejected DVD when finished.

Burned MS Visual Studio Pro 2008 90-day Trial ISO image to DVD in less than 10 minutes. I set the speed to lowest (36x). Worked perfectly on Vista Home Premium (DVD-R) media. (HP PC dual-core AMD 2.4Ghz) 100% as advertised. Thank you!

There are newer versions on the author's website.

didn't work for me, as expected. it said 'unsupported source drive type.' i've never gotten this toy to work with either vista or xp.

Anonymous said...

Calling this a Vista Power Toy is disengenous. It DOES make it seem like it's an integrated and MS-approved app. You should remove this from the introduction. Surprised MS isn't after you for this.

BTW my file wouldn't burn, called my CD "non-writeable" and "non-usable" and "cannot use this media." Vista Home Premium 32=bit on Compaq Presarioi 700 laptop.

Thanks for this app - nice work!

Sorry if I'm a little skeptical. Daemon, Alcohol, and other burn progams always messed up my boot files. This doesn't affect them, does it? And does it burn at slow speeds under 8X?

This utility is rather poor. Aside from the hastily thrown together user interface, I have yet to produce a good disc using it. Sometimes I receive error messages (that I can't quite read, because they are chopped off and the UI isn't resizable), sometimes I receive no error messages but the disc ends up being unusable. I'm off to find an alternative.

x64 Works Great! Just Burned Vista Ultimate x64 (3+ GB) in under 4 minutes.

Excellent toy, works great on my Vista 32-bit machine. But I agree, the term "powertoy" makes you think it's a Microsoft product, which it is not.

Anonymous said...

It's just a piece of crap, eats 70% of cpu just to burn a DVD, progress indicator was already a few minutes at 100% before the burning was really finished.
Sorry but no good words, Nero burning ROM is way better ....

Greetings from 2 years in the future. I just installed ISO Recorder on a Vista x64 machine, and it worked like a charm.

Now I can get rid of my Linux dual-boot set up. I only used it to burn isos.

David said...

Hello, Neil.

Thank you for encouraging users to make a donation to Alex Feinman in appreciation for ISO Recorder.

Alex has managed to keep this free utility -- which conveniently integrates with Windows Explorer -- compatible with existing versions of Windows since XP (which was used ISOs).

ISO Recorder 3.0 (See v3.1 Below)

Vista users should note Alex's warnings about ISO Recorder 3.0 (Vista only, 32- and 64-bit):

- It does not perform a check to verfy that an image (ISO) is compatible with the media you have inserted. Please do not complain to Alex after your attempt to burn a DVD ISO to a CD-ROM/CD-RW disc.

- If you have started the write/"burn" process, the 'Cancel' button will not stop the write process.

- The status of your optical drive is not selectable, so is the disc is always closed.

- The "Properties" field (for setting the maximum speed, for example) do not work. Alex had to disable the feature in the 3.0 build.

- After you make a disc-to-disc copy (which Alex refers to as "copying a CD/DVD in-place (using a single drive)," ISO Recorder 3.0 leaves an image file (IS) in the temporary directory -- which makes perfect sense, because I suspect most disc-to-disc copies (especially of a DVD-ROM filled with data) would fail (or be corrupted) if the process had to occur entirely in RAM.

Disk images usually are saved with the .ISO extension, although you can choose any one you like (and, if you back up a disc image for Mac OS X, you will note that uncompressed images have the .IMG extension).

When ISO Recorder creates an image of a bootable CD, it copies the boot data to the image. When you use that image with a blank CD, it will be bootable.

To my knowledge, ISO Recorder has never and still does not support creating images of audio or video CDs.

ISO Recorder 3.1

Finally, on 23 January 2009, Alex release version 3.1 of ISO Recorder (for Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008:

Alex write, "ISO Recorder for Windows Vista/Windows 7 supports CD, DVD, and Blu Ray [sic] operations. Blu Ray on Windows Vista requires SP2...."

ISO Recorder 3.1 appears to be for Windows Vist, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 (32- and 64-bit). Alex refers to it as the "Windows Vista and Windows 7 Edition" of ISO Recorder, which I assume indicates that Windows XP is not supported, but please research compatibility with XP if is a a concern.

Disclaimer: I do not no which, if any of the caveats for ISO Recorder 3.0 apply to ISO Recorder 3.1. I have no affiliation with Alex, but he deserves gratitude, recognition, and I am sure he would appreciate even donations -- and, certainly, each of us can "afford" to thank Alex Feinman!

CDBurnerXP and Windows Vista

Finally, I close with an "FYI" about CDBurnerXP: In 2007 (over two years ago), a user stated that CDBurnerXP "doesn't work with Vista."

I was given a new notebook in August 2008 (assembled in May 2008 by some of the thousands of oppressed, underpaid workers utilized as "cheap labor" in China).

The notebook was preloaded with a 32-bit, OEM version of Vista Home Premium SP1. The release notes for CDBurerXP, and my experience, indicate that CDBurnerXP is fully compatible with Vista SP1, and SP2 (and probably Windows 7, by now).

Cordially,

David
